Doghouse Pups

40% of Doghouse, circa 1983. Erv and I played in a band called Black Velvet, and we traveled around the state opening for 3 + 1. We used to play at places like the Silver Moon in Newport, King of Clubs at Swifton and lots of fun times at the Jaycee Building in Batesville. One time we traveled all the way to Cardwell, MO to play for $200, which was a lot of money then. We left early and spent almost all day setting up to play for 4 people. We stopped after the first set and broke our stuff down and when we asked the manager for our money he just laughed. I remember coasting back into town at around 4am, and the only thing more empty than our gas tank was our stomachs.

Good googly moogly. I didn't know any of those pictures existed anymore. I was the all in one roadie for Black Velvet (for those who don't know), in charge of lights, packing gear, unpacking gear, getting the crap shocked out of me (at Cardwell, Missouri, in fact), and schmoozing the bar tenders for discount beers (they're for the band, man!).

Our light board was made of plywood, and used old style car headlight switches (the kind you pulled and pushed for on and off) and metal toggle switches. I learned that duct tape made great bandages for bleeding finger tips. Our lights were coffee cans with high wattage bulbs in them screwed onto 2x6's.

That, my friends, was real rock and roll.

Well, if it isn't the king of "Homer's Social Exercise Club and Lucky Spot." What a place, kind of the redneck version of the barroom scene in Star Wars. It actually made Rudy Kazoo's look sophisticated.

What about getting pulled over in Portia at 5am? I think the cop let everyone go with a warning because nobody would believe what he saw.
